Background The Deer Commission for Scotland (DCS) is a Non-Departmental Public Body charged with furthering the conservation, control and sustainable management of all species of wild deer in Scotland, and to keep under review all matters, including welfare, relating to wild deer.
The Job The Deer Commission for Scotland (DCS) has a network of 5 area-based Deer Officers. Each Deer Officer takes a lead on site-based deer issues within their area as well as a national lead on developing strands of policy. The current vacancy is for a Deer Officer to cover the West Highlands.
These posts are responsible for delivering DCS work in relation to our protected sites programme and supporting local deer management. Key duties will include leading on priority casework to develop solutions in partnership with private landowners, managers and agencies. Deer Officers will be expected to represent the Deer Commission at Deer Management Group Meetings, lead on deer population and habitat monitoring operations; provide information and advice to individuals and organisations, promoting best practice and DCS policy; preparing casework reports for consideration by DCS staff and board members.
Qualifications & Experience
A Degree in biological or land use sciences with post graduate employment is desirable; however equal weighting will be given to practical experience and knowledge of a deer-related industry.
This is a permanent and pensionable appointment. You should expect to start at the minimum of the salary range although a higher starting salary may exceptionally be offered where a candidate’s skills, knowledge and/or experience are considered to be particularly relevant and are clearly evident in the selection process.
