Record-breaking attendance at Best Practice event
Our latest Best Practice Demonstration event attracted record numbers with around 160 participants. It took place on 28-29 October, kindly hosted by Strathconon Estate. The primary aim was to encourage new attendees with advertising targeted to those new to Best Practice and to the events.
The Best Practice Project is committed to promoting the practical, everyday use of DCS’ 74 Best Practice guides to all those who manage deer.
To date, we have held eight Best Practice Demonstration events all over Scotland with around 1200 participants. To allow participants to gain insight into several topics in one day, we have organised the events into relatively short, bite-sized sessions.
Topics covered were:
- habitat impact assessment
- carcass extraction
- culling
- lardering
- firearms
- deer health and welfare
- Adding value: wildlife tourism, customer care and venison production.
Our dedicated College Day on the 30 October, now in its third year, was once again well received by some 75 students from Elmwood, Borders and North Highland colleges. As most of students attending were just entering their courses, the event provided an ideal introduction to Best Practice and gave the students, many new to deer management, a chance to see what will be expected of them as they progress through their studies and careers. Fourteen pupils from Strathconon Primary School also braved the cold to come along to find out more about deer and deer management.
