A81
In December 2003 DCS received an expression of concern from Central Scotland Police about the number of vehicle collisions involving roe deer on a 2km stretch of the A81 (Ballet crossroads to Mugdock junction). During a 15 month period 15 roe deer were killed on this stretch of road, and police also received reports of 17 sightings and/or near misses.
DCS have organised several stakeholder meetings to discuss the issue of deer collisions on the section of road. Stakeholders attending these meetings include the Police, Forestry Commission, Scottish Wildlife Trust, Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Stirling Council, The Mugdock Residents Association, Strathblane Community Council, Mugdock Country Park and local landowners.
During these meetings mitigation options have been discussed and efforts have been made to raise awareness among the local communities. During the last fifteen months the police have only received one record of a roe deer having been killed, a marked reduction compared to the high number previously recorded. DCS continues to monitor the situation
