A835 between Garve and Ullapool
In order to actively seek solutions to address the threat to Public Safety on the A835, it was agreed to appoint a panel under Section 4 of the Act. The remit of this Panel is to investigate further the nature and scale of the problem and to identify cost-effective and realistic mitigation options. The group comprises representatives from Northern Constabulary, Bear Scotland, West Ross Deer Management Group, North Ross Deer Management Group, Highland Council and the Scottish Executive.
The first formal meeting of the Panel was held in the first week of December 2004.
It was agreed to continue to further scope the nature and scale of the problem and identify areas where feasible and realistic mitigation options will work.
A draft interim report on progress was prepared by DCS on behalf of the Panel in December 2005.
The Panel is continuing to refine their recommendations in preparation for an action plan to be submitted to DCS in June.
It should be noted that some of the measures to reduce accident frequency recommended by the Panel, such as increasing driver awareness are already underway.
