A87
Survey work was carried out in 2003, 2004 and 2005 to investigate in detail specific locations on the A87 where there were high deer numbers close to the road. Ongoing survey work has obtained evidence of collisions with deer occurring regularly on the A87 at certain locations. In light of this data and further concern expressed from various sources regarding the frequency of accidents occurring on the A87, it was agreed that this road should become a Priority Site
In order to actively seek solutions, it was agreed to appoint a panel under Section 4 of the Act, involving other stakeholders such as Northern Constabulary, Highland Council, BEAR and the Scottish Executive.
The first meeting of the Panel took place in the first week of June 2005
It was agreed to continue to further scope the nature and scale of the problem and identify areas where feasible and realistic mitigation options will work.
The options currently being explored include vegetation management, improved driver awareness (investigating all options such as intelligent/electronic signage) and a review of all fencing, both existing and proposed.
