Flow Country

DCS received an expression of concern from FCS based on deer preventing the establishment of broad-leaved woodland, in both private and public forests, within plantations of the Flow Country. The site was classified as a Site for Assessment and discussions have taken place between estates and agencies to implement a baseline survey on the impacts that deer may be having on both the woodlands and the natural heritage features of the site.

The original expression of concern was based on broadleaf woodland establishment being prevented by deer, in both private and public forests, even within fenced plantations.  Many of these areas of woodland have received significant public investment through WGS.

The woodland blocks in question are holding unknown numbers of deer and some existing fences are already porous. Given the importance in scale and nature of the surrounding Natura sites, the impact on neighbouring natural heritage interests is considerable.

A Base line survey has been carried out to assess the impacts of deer to the Natura Habitats, the results of which have to be discussed with SNH and the estates.

A similar data collection exercise is underway with FCS and it is hoped this will be completed by May 2006 to inform SFGS deer management issues.
